US FDA Proposes New Rules to Address Pet Deaths

  •   |   Meghan Freed

The Food and Drug Administration has stepped in with new proposed rules amid an ongoing investigation following a rash of pet deaths. According to estimates, more than 3,600 pets, mostly dogs, fell ill after eating jerky treats from China. At least 580 pets died. The FDA’s proposed regulations are unrelated to the current investigation, but instead are part of the Food Safety Modernization Act and joint a recent outburst of new rules.

Still, the proposed rule would establish the first manufacturing practices that specifically address the manufacturing, processing, packing, and holding of animal food. The FDA’s hope is that these rules will help ensure that pet food manufactured under conditions and practices that protect against contamination.

Daphne approves.
