Because the Middlesex Judicial District Court is located in Middletown, divorce attorneys most often refer to it as the “Middletown Family Court.”
You can file divorce and family law cases in either the Connecticut family court that covers the town or city where you live, or the city or town where your spouse or partner lives. Many Connecticut towns also have a choice of divorce court.
Residents of Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Middlefield, Middletown, Old Saybrook, Portland, and Westbrook file their divorces in Middletown Family Court.
Cromwell residents are a little different. They can file in either Middletown or the judicial district of Hartford.
The Connecticut Court’s Family Division hears cases involving family relationships.
Typical cases include:
Post-Judgment issues such as Modification and Contempt
Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs)
Termination of Parental Rights (TPRs)
The Middletown Family Court also houses a special session of the CT Superior Court Family Division. It’s called the Regional Family Trial Docket, or “RFTD.” Family courts from across Connecticut refer cases to the RFTD, which is separate and distinct from the traditional Middletown Family Court.
