Finding Happiness After Divorce

  •   |   Meghan Freed

At Freed Marcroft we keep in touch with our clients following their divorces, and how they have taught us that life — whether during divorce or any other tough time — is what you make of it.  You can choose whether you wallow in it or learn from it. You can choose whether you look forward or keep looking backward.

Another hearteningly common refrain from our clients is that one day they wake up and suddenly realize that they are happy.  In some cases, even when a divorce was the last thing they wanted, afterward they discover that they are really, truly, happy.

Having been through divorce myself, I know that this is true.  As a lawyer who helps people go through divorce, I also know that this is almost impossible to accept when you are in the midst it.

If you are experiencing upheaval, chaos, sadness, fear, and even disappointment or anger it is hard to believe — let alone have faith — that one day you may be happier divorced than you ever were married.

In honor of Valentine’s Day, Michelle Noehren, of Connecticut Working Moms, wrote an excellent article “A Message of Hope to Anyone Going Through Divorce” that does a terrific job of sharing her experience (and happiness!) one year out from divorce.  You can and should read it on Connecticut Working Moms in its entirety.  For now, though, one of my favorite quotes:

“I [realized that I] am so much better off than I was a year ago. Not having the daily tension that I did before, not feeling emotionally unseen, not trying to fix something not fixable, has meant that I’m becoming my true self again. I feel a freedom I didn’t even know I had lost. The freedom to be myself, completely and totally. My heart is big, it always has been. But I lost myself for a while. And now I’m finding myself again and it feels so.damn.good.”

At Freed Marcroft we understand that divorce is as much emotional as it is a legal process.  We know that you may feel emotionally overwhelmed and unprepared during a divorce to make major decisions that will affect you and your family for years to come. We will guide you step by step through the issues that must be addressed in divorce and will carefully and compassionately explain the divorce process, develop strategies to meet your needs, and discuss possible outcomes with you.  If you would like to learn more, please contact us.
