What To Expect at Your Family Law Strategy Session

  •   |   Meghan Freed

At the Goals & Planning Conference, we talked about what’s going on in your life right now and developed your initial goals for what you want your life to look like instead.  We decided we were a good fit to work together, so then we got to work handpicking the members of your legal team.  You’ll meet some of them during your first meeting with your Freed Marcroft legal team — the Strategy Session.  We’ve put this article together to help you know what to expect.

What Will We Discuss at My Strategy Session?

The Goals & Planning Conference was all about your future.  We talked about what’s going on in your life right now, and together figured out what you want your life to look like instead.  After your Goals & Planning Conference, we handpicked your legal team.  Then your lawyer got to work reviewing your case and preparing legal options for you based on your goals and the background that you provided.  At your Strategy Session, your attorney will go over those options in detail, and together you will solidify your initial legal strategy for your family law matter.  Your Strategy Session is also an excellent opportunity for you to get answers to any legal questions you have.

Why Do You Call My Initial Meeting With My Legal Team the Strategy Session?

We named our initial divorce consultation the Strategy Session because — wait for it — our primary objective at the Strategy Session is to decide the initial strategy for your case.  In other words, at the Goals & Planning Conference, we dig deep and figure out your goals for the future.  At the Strategy Session, we make the plan to get you there.

How Long Does a Strategy Session Take?

The Strategy Session typically lasts about 45 to 90 minutes.

What Should I Bring With Me or Have Prepared?

You’re in capable hands — your attorneys will take the lead at your Strategy Session.  They have reviewed your case and developed options and recommendations for you to consider.

Before your Strategy Session, we will send you a brief questionnaire to complete that will set you up for a great meeting.  If there is anything else specific that we want to review ahead of time, we will make sure to ask you for it.

If you have questions, jot them down — the Strategy Session is also the time to get them answered.  (In the meantime, we have lots of legal information about the most common legal questions on our Divorce and Family Law Blog, YouTube channel, and in our Divorce Information and Facts section.)

And remember, if you don’t have any immediate questions that’s perfectly fine.

What if Something Urgent Happens Prior To My Strategy Session?

Reach out to us so that we can help.  And remember, if there’s an emergency — such as you are concerned for your safety or your children’s safety — your first call should be the police.

What Happens After My Strategy Session?

If you’re working with us on most divorce or family law litigation matters, the Discovery Kickoff Conference will be your next major appointment with us after your Strategy Session.  We want to get you moving forward towards your goals as soon as possible and to make that happen, we need quite a bit of background and documents (or “Discovery“) from you early on.  At the Discovery Kickoff, we get set up to work together in the way that will be most efficient and effective for your preferred working style.
