The state motto of Idaho is “esto perpetua”, or “let it be perpetual”; to Attorney Katy Peterson, however, there is beauty in the ever-changing as well.

Katy Peterson

Katy spent most of her life in Boise, Idaho, teaching junior high and high school for five years before pivoting her career path to law. She attended Boise State University where she competed in speech and debate. She fondly remembers being “dragged kicking and screaming” – it was a prerequisite for her major – but quickly learned to love it. She realized the amount of time and effort put into preparing directly correlated to earned success. Katy was named a Pi Kappa Delta All-American Collegiate Debater, a prestigious award presented to ten students nationally each year, and was named to the 2007 Northwest Forensics Conference Dream Team. She later went on to coach competitive speech and debate at the collegiate and high school level after graduation.

Katy’s older brother was a successful speech and debate competitor. He went on to law school, but tragically passed away before receiving the results of his bar exam. Katy looked up to her brother and notes that she finds comfort in following in his footsteps through her former involvement in competitive speech and debate, and her current practice of law.

Katy received her law degree from the University of Idaho, where she received the Outstanding Student Service award, and served in multiple leadership positions in the Student Bar Association. In 2020, Katy was named an Accomplished 40 Under 40 by Idaho Business Review.

Katy feels she didn’t necessarily choose family law, but that it chose her. She loves family law because it is steeped in humanity. It allows her to empathize with people’s stories, and to help them achieve positive change in their lives. Katy believes in Freed Marcroft’s forward thinking and progressive values and has found a home where her leadership skills are put to use. She believes Freed Marcroft walks the walk, and is refreshed by the tight-knit team, and their commitment to bettering themselves and their clients.

In addition to practicing law, Katy is extremely motivated by fitness. An AFAA and Les Mills certified group exercise instructor, Katy believes her fitness journey provides an opportunity to be reminded of the many positive milestones she’s achieved. Exercise has provided clarity, kept her motivated, and given her a unique perspective on choosing her battles. Katy believes there is always more to learn and that her greatest accomplishment is always in the works. She will never settle, never stop, and believes in reflecting often.

Katy lives with her husband and daughter and their golden retriever Moose. It is no surprise they enjoy an active lifestyle, and love to explore their surroundings.
