Big, Decision to Divorce. Big, Empowered Life.

I made a very exciting but scary decision. And you should too.

About one year ago, I made a really exciting, but pretty scary decision to change my employment. Granted, I was leaving my work as a family lawyer at a general practice firm to begin work here at Freed Marcroft, also a family law firm, so it wasn’t an entirely new career, but a pretty big change, nonetheless.

I was comfortable with my prior job. I was happy with the work I was doing and I truly loved my colleagues and clients. I never thought I would leave. Until an opportunity presented itself to me and I knew I had to explore it. Initially, I wrestled with the possibility of this change, unsure if I was ready, if it was the right choice, and how it would shape my future. Then, I sat down with Kristen and Meghan, learned more about Freed Marcroft’s mission and beliefs, and knew it was the place for me. I won’t pretend that the anticipation of this change, conversations with my former boss and colleagues about this decision or the actual huge change weren’t difficult or scary (because they definitely were). This wasn’t like leaving any previous job: this one was special.  But, as I look back over this past year, I know beyond the shadow of a doubt, that this scary, exciting decision was the best one I’ve ever made.

This life I am lucky enough to live, is my very best. I am an overall happier person, which in turn, makes me a happier lawyer. I am a better lawyer to my clients and colleagues, and a better friend, sister, girlfriend, daughter, and aunt to all of the people in my life.  I lose count of how many times each week I think to myself, or say out loud, some variation of, “Isn’t life beautiful?” and, “Look where we are now.” I would be remiss if I failed to mention that none of this would be possible without the leap of faith taken by our fearless leaders, Kristen and Meghan, when, six years ago, they decided to open their own law firm.  Kristen and I went to law school together, and so these fearless leaders are also very dear friends of mine.

When Kristen and I were studying for the bar exam (with Meghan’s help and saintly patience), they informed me that they were going to open their own firm.  That is BRAVE. Scary, yes.  Exciting, yes.  But mostly really, really, brave. I cannot begin to put into words what has gone into growing Freed Marcroft into the place it is today, but I do know that without that scary and exciting decision 6 years ago, none of us would be lucky enough to be here.

As I think about all of this, I am reminded of many of my amazing clients, and potential clients, who are currently thinking about, or are in the midst of making their own decision about whether to divorce.  They are experiencing their own anxieties and worries over this change and the difficult conversations they will have with their spouse, children and loved ones.  But I know, and soon, they will too, that on the other side of this big scary decision to divorce, one they may never have believed they would make, lies the absolute best version of their lives.

The decision to divorce is not something any of us here at Freed Marcroft take lightly, but we believe that the decision to end an unhappy marriage is a brave one. Even though the decision can be immensely scary, it is also exciting.  And so, I urge you to be brave, take the chance, and make the choice. Your life will be better for it.
